At Stories In My Backyard (SIMBY), we are dedicated to providing students in predominantly Black Philadelphia middle and high schools access to culturally relevant media arts education led by Black instructors. Our mission is to empower the next generation to tell their own stories through media arts and help close the opportunity gap. Join us in creating a more equitable future.
PROGRAMS & PROJECTS.
At SIMBY, we offer a range of media arts programs and projects designed to promote creativity, critical thinking, and storytelling. Our instructors come from diverse backgrounds and are passionate about empowering students to share their unique perspectives. From digital storytelling to podcasting, we offer workshops that help students develop media literacy and technical skills. Together, we can inspire the next generation of storytellers.
Media Arts Workshops
Our media arts workshops provide students with hands-on experience in a variety of multimedia tools and techniques. Through our workshops, students learn how to express themselves through different mediums such as film, photography, and graphic design. Our instructors are industry professionals who are committed to helping students develop their skills and find their voice.
Community Engagement
At SIMBY, we believe in the power of community. Our community engagement programs bring together students, educators, and industry professionals to create meaningful connections and foster a sense of belonging. From film screenings to networking events, we provide opportunities for students to interact with professionals in the media arts industry and build relationships that last a lifetime.
Digital Media Literacy
In today's digital age, media literacy is more important than ever. Our digital media literacy program teaches students how to critically evaluate media and use technology responsibly. Through our program, students learn how to identify fake news, protect their online privacy, and use social media in a positive way.
Learning Materials
We create original learning resources to promote self-paced learning while providing representation for our learners, and access beyond space and time to the information needed to advance in the media arts.
